Thinking about going on a holiday, but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg? There are plenty of places you can go in the world where you can have a fantastic vacation while spending next to nothing. Some of these places will cost a little more to fly to, but the cost savings of actually being in those countries generally make up for it. Of course, where you go depends a bit on where in the world you are. If you’re in the United States, it’s going to be much cheaper for you to go to Central America than somewhere in Europe.
Without further ado, here are five highly affordable vacation destinations.
Destination #1: Thailand
Thailand is filled with amazing beaches and fantastic cultures. From elephant riding and tiger petting to fire spinners on the beach, Thailand has it all. A meal in Thailand costs a measly $0.50 cents to $1 and most meals cost you under $2. Having your own bungalow by the side of the beach on an island will only cost you $10 a night.
As far as affordable destinations go, Thailand should definitely be at the top of any list.
Destination #2: Turkey
Both Istanbul and the ocean side have a fantastic reputation. Turkey is notoriously cheap, much cheaper than its neighbor Greece. Furthermore, Turkey has all kinds of adventure sports that you wouldn’t find in other parts of the world.
If you want to scuba dive, hang glide, bungee jump or do any number of other more adventurous things while on a budget, Turkey is a fantastic place to do it.
Destination #3: Slovakia
Slovakia isn’t a destination you want to go to in Summer. However, if you have some time off in the winter, Slovakia can be an absolute haven.
Slovakia is one of the best places to go skiing in Europe. In the states, a day on the slopes could easily cost you $100 to $200, including your lift ticket and your gear rental. In Slovakia, a whole day of skiing all included will generally cost you under $30.
If you want to experience a completely different culture, be surrounded by a unique language, try foreign foods and enjoy a fantastic winter skiing holiday experience, consider giving Slovakia a try.
Destination #4: Cuba
Though Cuba is taking steps towards democracy and capitalism, they’re still, by and large, a community or socialist community. Just about everything in Cuba is still very affordable.
It’s one of the few places in the world that has preserved its soul more or less completely. If you want to really experience a destination that hasn’t been overly tainted by tourism, Cuba is a fantastic place to go.
Want to learn Cuban Salsa from the very country where it originated? You can – For well under $10 an hour. Want to experience fantastic Cuban food? It’s cheap, tasty and it’s everywhere. Want to try the Cuban cigars that you’ve heard so much about and seen in the movies? It’s the best place to do it.
Destination #5: Costa Rica
Finally, we finish this list off with Costa Rica. Costa Rica is world famous for having amazing beaches, phenomenal nightlife and an all-around great lifestyle for travelers and holiday vacationers.
One thing that sets Costa Rica apart from other Central and South American countries is its safety. Costa Rica’s crime rates are much lower than Mexico, Chile, Columbia or just about any other country in the area.
If you want to go to a vacation spot and you don’t want to put yourself at personal risk, Costa Rica is a prime spot.
Costa Rica combines both local life with tourist life. If you want to mingle with other tourists and speak English, you can. If you want to learn some Spanish and experience the local lifestyle, you can do that too.
Note that Costa Rica is slightly more expensive than the rest of the places on this list. That’s because it’s relatively touristy and it’s a very small place. More demand with small supply of space means higher places. That said, if you stay in out of the way places, it’s still definitely much cheaper than a vacation in the United States.
